I Was Born For This: Attic Greek

Recently I was introduced to a game called Journey, and I have to say it is one of my favorite games. If you haven’t played it, I recommend it.

The credits song describes a hero’s journey by taking lines from historically important works in their original language for its lyrics.

Upon reading a translation of the lyrics I felt oddly compelled to translate them into Attic Greek. It was at this point that I wished I was able to read the other languages that had been used to write this song since I am now only able to make a translation of a translation.

Unfortunately I was never required to compose for class while I was formally studying Greek so it doesn’t come easy to me. Also poetics were never a strong point for me even in English so I doubt my translation will come off as good poetry.

The translation:

This is the English I was working with.

To each his day is given
To each his day is given

Time it is for me to go

Lost is my homecoming
Lost is my homecoming

I was born for this

Along this road
No one goes
This autumn eve

Along this road
No one goes
This autumn eve

I was born for this
Do not pity me
I was born for this

If you’re skilled in Attic Greek please feel free to critique my work.

The video below will let you hear the original song.
